Welfare Considerations

Wildlife photography welfare concerns are frequently underestimated by photographers motivated by conservation enthusiasm. Repeated disturbance of breeding birds — even without direct contact — can cause nest abandonment, exposure of chicks to predators, and increased energy expenditure by adults. Rare species concentrated at one site by social media attention face cumulative disturbance from many individual photographers each making choices that seem individually harmless. The use of bait to attract predators for photography raises additional welfare concerns about the stress caused to the bait animals and the conditioning of wild animals to associate humans with food.
