Contaminated troughs, frozen drinkers in winter, and equipment failure in automated systems all contribute to livestock experiencing water restriction. The welfare consequences escalate rapidly — dairy cows in peak lactation without water for a day show dramatic production drops, behavioural changes, and rapid physiological deterioration. Regular checking of water sources, appropriate drinker design and maintenance, and contingency planning for system failures are fundamental welfare management responsibilities.
