The 3Rs framework — Replace, Reduce, Refine — has driven significant progress in replacing animal tests with alternatives, but millions of animals continue to be used in research annually.
The 3Rs framework represents an international commitment to minimising animal use in research through systematic replacement, reduction, and refinement. Progress has been real: validated in vitro alternatives have replaced many skin and eye irritation tests; advances in computational modelling reduce exploratory animal experiments; and refinement of procedures reduces suffering in remaining animal use. But millions of animals continue to be used annually, including in procedures classified as moderate or severe severity. The welfare argument for accelerated 3Rs implementation is strong — suffering in research animals is as real as suffering elsewhere, and where alternatives exist, their adoption should be mandatory.
