Water is the single most important nutrient for cattle welfare and production. Inadequate water provision causes rapid and severe welfare deterioration that is entirely preventable.
Cattle deprived of adequate water experience rapid physiological deterioration. Milk production falls precipitously within hours of water restriction as the body prioritises hydration maintenance over milk synthesis. Prolonged restriction causes osmotic stress, reduced rumen function and compromised thermoregulation. Social dominance hierarchies at water points mean that subordinate cattle in adequately provisioned herds may still be effectively deprived if trough space is insufficient to allow simultaneous access. Water quality issues that cause cattle to avoid drinking - from contamination, algal growth or mineral imbalance - cause the same welfare outcome as physical restriction despite water being nominally available.
