Welfare Considerations

African pygmy hedgehogs are increasingly popular as companion animals, but their welfare needs are poorly matched to typical domestic environments. As solitary, nocturnal, thermoregulation-dependent animals, they require conditions — warm ambient temperatures of 22-28C, specific lighting, large running areas — that are rarely provided adequately. Their lifespan in good care is 4-6 years, but many die younger from preventable conditions including Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome, obesity from inadequate exercise, and metabolic bone disease from inadequate calcium. The specialist nature of their care requirements means that impulse purchases frequently lead to welfare failure.
