Companion animal welfare research is increasingly focused on the measurement challenge: how do we know, in animals that cannot tell us, whether they are in pain, experiencing positive emotional states, or suffering from chronic disease? Validated assessment tools — pain scales, quality of life instruments, behavioural welfare indicators — provide clinicians and owners with objective frameworks for welfare evaluation. The growth of veterinary behavioural medicine reflects recognition that behaviour problems are often welfare problems — anxious, frustrated, or fearful animals are not well animals, and their welfare needs are as real as those of animals with physical disease. Companion animal welfare science is closing the gap between our concern for these animals and our ability to assess and improve their wellbeing.
