Zoo enrichment is often misunderstood as providing toys or treats to animals — but genuine enrichment science is more nuanced and demanding. Effective enrichment addresses specific behavioural motivations: a polar bear that is food-motivated needs foraging challenge; a great ape with strong social motivation needs complex social interaction. Enrichment that fails to target motivated behaviours, or to which the animal has habituated, provides no welfare benefit. Individual variation means that enrichment that engages one animal may be ignored by another. Rigorous enrichment programmes assess effectiveness through behavioural monitoring, ensure novelty through rotation, and recognise keeper relationships as among the richest enrichment available.
