Refinement welfare improvements are the most immediately achievable 3R interventions because they improve the welfare of animals already in use without requiring replacement of the whole research model. Improved anaesthesia and analgesia protocols reduce acute pain; humane endpoint criteria prevent unnecessary prolongation of suffering when research objectives are met; environmental enrichment reduces chronic stress in animal housing. Importantly, welfare refinements often improve scientific quality — stressed, pain-impaired, or otherwise poorly-housed animals produce more variable physiological data, reducing experimental reproducibility. This creates a direct scientific incentive for refinement that aligns with welfare improvement.
