Advances in wildlife monitoring technology — GPS tracking, camera traps, environmental DNA, and acoustic monitoring — are improving welfare science by enabling less invasive research.
Wildlife monitoring technology welfare is an active area of innovation as researchers develop less invasive methods of gathering population and individual data. Traditional monitoring through capture, marking, and recapture imposed welfare costs on captured animals — stress, handling injuries, and tag attachment effects. Remote sensing technologies increasingly enable equivalent or better data collection without capture: camera traps identify individuals through natural markings; environmental DNA detects species without contact; acoustic monitoring counts populations through vocalisations. Where capture is still required, lighter and smarter bio-logging devices reduce the mass and attachment-related welfare costs for tagged animals.
