Some welfare problems are more prevalent in organic systems: outdoor pigs face weather extremes that housed animals avoid; organic hens may have higher parasitic burden from outdoor access; the restriction of prophylactic antibiotics requires higher preventive management competence. Organic as a welfare proxy is useful but imperfect.
