Tilapia welfare presents the characteristic aquaculture challenge of farming a species whose social and environmental needs are difficult to meet at commercial scale. Social organisation involves territorial dominance hierarchies that are disrupted by high-density stocking. Temperature requirements are strict. Ammonia accumulation from high stocking densities creates water quality challenges causing gill damage and physiological stress. The welfare science for tilapia is less developed than for salmonids, reflecting their lower commercial value in Western markets despite enormous production volumes globally.
