Feral and free-roaming cat populations pose welfare challenges for both cats and wildlife, and trap-neuter-return programmes represent the most humane management approach.
Feral cats occupy a difficult welfare position: they are not truly wild animals, having descended from domestic cats, but cannot be socialised for adoption. Unmanaged feral populations experience high mortality from disease, injury, and starvation. Lethal control creates ongoing suffering without resolving the population problem. TNR with dedicated colony management improves feral cat welfare and reduces wildlife predation compared to unmanaged free-roaming populations.
