Wild Animal Suffering in Nature

Wild animals face enormous suffering from predation, disease, starvation, and parasitism — raising profound questions about the scale of natural suffering and human responsibility.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Wild animal suffering is morally significant but largely invisible and outside human control. Unlike farm animal welfare, interventions are limited: we cannot prevent predation or eliminate parasites without catastrophic ecological consequences. However, this does not mean wild animal welfare is irrelevant — targeted interventions like wildlife medicine, wildlife corridor safety, and reducing human-caused harms (pollution, habitat destruction, climate change) all reduce wild animal suffering. The long-term case for wild animal welfare research and limited interventions is growing stronger.
