Research into positive emotional states in farm animals — play, anticipation, curiosity — is transforming welfare science from minimising suffering to actively promoting flourishing.
The shift from negative to positive welfare assessment represents a philosophical and practical advance: rather than asking only whether animals are suffering, we can now ask whether they are experiencing positive states — curiosity, play, anticipation, and social engagement. Farm animals in enriched, well-managed environments show these positive states regularly. The welfare implication is that minimum standards preventing suffering are necessary but not sufficient — good welfare actively provides opportunity for positive experience.
