Rooting is the most fundamental and motivation-intensive natural behaviour in pigs, and its frustration through bare concrete housing is a core welfare failure of intensive production.
Rooting deprivation is arguably the single most significant behavioural welfare failure in pig production. Pigs have a rooting drive that is not reduced by feeding — they are motivated to root even on a full stomach. On bare concrete, this drive redirects into bar-biting, tail-biting, and sham rooting on smooth surfaces — stereotypies indicating chronic frustration. Deep rooting substrate, even when provided intermittently, reduces these behaviours and improves welfare indicators. The barrier to provision is primarily labour cost, not technical feasibility.
