Hamsters are widely sold as low-maintenance starter pets, but welfare research reveals that typical pet shop cages are far too small to meet their complex behavioural needs.
The disconnect between hamster welfare requirements and the cages commonly sold in pet shops is stark. A hamster in a 30cm cage with a small solid wheel is neurologically deprived in ways directly analogous to a human confined to a bathroom. Behavioural frustration manifests as stereotypies, bar-biting and aggression — all signs of compromised welfare. Research shows that hamsters provided with large enriched enclosures show lower anxiety, more natural behaviour and better immune function. The solution requires both retailer change and better consumer education.
