Great apes — chimpanzees, gorillas, bonobos and orangutans — present the most demanding welfare challenge in zoo keeping due to their cognitive sophistication and complex social needs.
The cognitive sophistication of great apes makes their welfare needs uniquely demanding. Social complexity, coalitional politics, long-term memory of past relationships, and deep emotional bonds with group members mean that disrupting social groups, preventing natural social behaviours, or providing insufficient cognitive challenge produces measurable psychological harm. Some great ape welfare scientists argue that the best zoos now achieve welfare outcomes comparable to well-managed sanctuary environments; others maintain that captivity is inherently incompatible with the needs of these animals.
