Snakes are increasingly popular as pets but their welfare needs — thermal regulation, feeding, space and enrichment — are frequently misunderstood or inadequately provided.
Snake welfare failures are predominantly husbandry failures: incorrect temperature gradients, inadequate humidity, inappropriate substrate, insufficient space, and incorrect feeding schedules. A ball python in a too-small vivarium with inadequate heat gradient cannot thermoregulate, digest food, or move normally — conditions that cause chronic physiological stress even when the snake appears quiet. The stoic appearance of reptiles disguises significant internal compromise. Unlike mammals, distress in snakes is almost never obvious until the animal is critically ill.
