Welfare Considerations

The welfare harm in the exotic pet trade operates across a long chain: capture from wild populations is often brutal and wasteful; transport involves overcrowding, temperature stress, dehydration and disease; retail environments are inadequate for many species; and home keeping frequently fails to meet complex needs. The entire chain is driven by consumer demand that is largely uninformed about the suffering that produces the cute animal in the video. CITES provides a partial framework but cannot address the welfare of animals traded legally within national borders.

Never purchase exotic pets on impulse — research every species thoroughly before acquiring one
Refuse to share or engage with social media content featuring poorly housed exotic animals
Support CITES strengthening and additional WABS agreements protecting species not yet covered
Donate to Traffic and IFAW, which monitor and combat illegal wildlife trade globally
Advocate for national legislation requiring comprehensive welfare assessment before exotic species are permitted in trade
