Research into positive emotional states in cattle is transforming how welfare is assessed, moving beyond absence of suffering to presence of genuine wellbeing.
The welfare science of positive cattle emotions provides a richer framework for farm assessment than negative indicator approaches alone. A cow without disease or injury but confined to a barren, unstimulating tie stall may be free of measurable suffering but devoid of positive experience. A cow on a well-managed pasture with companions, foraging opportunities and stability shows play behaviour, relaxed ear posture and optimistic cognitive responses that indicate genuine wellbeing. Both the science and the ethics point in the same direction: positive welfare is achievable at farm level and should be the target, not just the elimination of the most egregious suffering.
