Camera traps, eDNA analysis, acoustic monitoring and satellite tagging have transformed wildlife research, but each technology raises its own animal welfare considerations.
Technology that monitors animals without contact is a welfare advance over approaches requiring capture, restraint and marking. Camera traps, acoustic recorders and eDNA sampling produce population and behavioural data with zero direct welfare impact on individual animals. Where animal capture and tagging is necessary for research, welfare standards require minimising handling time, using reversible anaesthesia where possible, and designing equipment that does not impair natural movement or behaviour. The growing toolkit of non-contact monitoring reduces the justification for high-disturbance survey methods.
