Wild animals experience enormous amounts of suffering from predation, disease, starvation and parasitism — raising profound philosophical questions about our responsibilities.
Wild animal suffering represents the largest single source of animal suffering on Earth — dwarfing both farming and captivity in the sheer number of individuals experiencing predation, starvation, disease and parasitism. This recognition creates profound philosophical and practical challenges. Some argue that natural suffering requires no intervention; others that our growing ability to reduce wild animal suffering creates moral obligations. Practical welfare interventions already exist: wildlife contraception, rabies vaccination, and targeted disease treatment programmes. The Wild Animal Initiative funds research into larger-scale interventions and their potential impacts.
