Rainbow trout are the most widely farmed salmonid in Europe after Atlantic salmon, and face welfare challenges related to stocking density, water quality and slaughter methods.
Rainbow trout welfare in aquaculture is better studied and more consistently regulated than for most other farmed fish species. The welfare challenges are well-identified: stocking density, water quality, handling during treatments and transport, and slaughter method. Electrical stunning at slaughter is now widespread for trout, representing a genuine welfare advance over live chilling or CO2 immersion. The remaining priorities are stocking density limits, transport welfare, and dorsal fin erosion monitoring as outcome measures. Progressive producers are implementing all of these; the challenge is ensuring minimum standards match best practice.
