Lighting failures in reptile keeping cause preventable suffering at enormous scale. A bearded dragon in a vivarium with inadequate UVB output develops metabolic bone disease — painful, progressive skeletal deformity — over months while appearing superficially healthy. By the time clinical signs are obvious, significant irreversible damage has occurred. The tragedy is that appropriate UVB lighting is inexpensive and well-understood; the problem is inadequate owner knowledge at point of purchase, and pet retailer failure to provide meaningful husbandry guidance alongside the animal.
