Free-range certification provides meaningful welfare benefit only when hens actually use outdoor range — and this is far from automatic. Hens are prey animals that avoid exposed areas without cover and shelter. A bare field offers them little incentive to venture outside, while a range with trees, shrubs, covered structures and scattered feed rewards engagement with the outdoor environment. Research clearly shows that range design determines how many hens use it and how frequently. Welfare certification that specifies range quality requirements — not just outdoor space provision — is the standard that meaningfully distinguishes free-range from battery in terms of actual hen experience.
