Welfare Considerations

Laboratory animal welfare exists on a spectrum from excellent (leading research institutions with dedicated welfare teams, enriched housing, and active NC3Rs engagement) to deeply inadequate (under-resourced facilities with minimal oversight in unregulated jurisdictions). The 3Rs framework provides clear ethical direction: replace animals with alternatives where possible, reduce numbers used to the minimum necessary, and refine procedures to minimise suffering. Implementation is uneven, with welfare quality correlating strongly with institutional resource, regulatory oversight, and the commitment of individual researchers. The most impactful improvements are systemic: enriched housing as the minimum standard, social housing for social species, and active researcher training in welfare science.
