Outdoor access for cattle provides genuine welfare benefits that extend beyond simple enrichment. Natural grazing behaviour, social grouping in appropriate space, access to variable terrain and the sensory stimulation of an outdoor environment all contribute to cattle wellbeing in ways that indoor systems cannot replicate. But poorly managed outdoor access — overstocked fields in wet conditions, inadequate shelter, no water provision outdoors — creates welfare failures of its own. The welfare benefit of outdoor access is conditional on appropriate stocking density, shelter provision and rotation management that prevents welfare problems specific to outdoor systems.
