Hedgehog populations have declined by 50% since the year 2000, but gardens managed with hedgehogs in mind can provide vital refuge habitat.

Welfare Considerations

Hedgehogs suffering from secondary poisoning through slug pellets or eating poisoned invertebrates experience neurological symptoms and distress before death. Those trapped in enclosed gardens cannot access sufficient food or mates. Gardens with swimming pools, bonfires, and garden machinery pose particular hazards. Supporting hedgehog habitat improves welfare for a declining species.

What You Can Do

Create a 13cm gap in garden fences to allow hedgehog movement
Avoid slug pellets — use copper tape, eggshells, or nematodes instead
Check bonfires before lighting for hibernating hedgehogs
Provide fresh water and wet cat food in hedgehog feeding stations
