Access to clean, fresh water is fundamental to livestock welfare, yet water quality is frequently substandard on farms and in transport.
Water deprivation causes acute suffering through thirst and physiological dehydration effects including increased heart rate, reduced blood volume, and elevated cortisol. Livestock that voluntarily reduce water intake due to poor water quality are chronically dehydrated and stressed. Transport without adequate water provision in warm conditions causes suffering that can be fatal. Water quality is a basic welfare requirement that is insufficiently monitored.
