Research into zoo elephant welfare has produced evidence-based space and environmental requirements that few existing facilities currently meet.
The fundamental mismatch between elephant natural behaviour patterns and zoo environments is well-documented. No existing zoo can replicate the social complexity, ranging behaviour, or environmental diversity of wild elephant habitats. The welfare cost is borne by intelligent, emotionally complex animals with long memories and deep social bonds. Modern zoo elephant facilities represent improvements over historical conditions but remain qualitatively inadequate.
