Pain recognition in cattle is a critical welfare skill that is insufficiently taught in agricultural training and often poorly applied on farms.
Cattle stoically mask pain, and the traditional view that they do not suffer significantly has limited investment in pain management. Scientific evidence shows cattle experience pain from routine procedures including dehorning, castration, and hoof trimming that is rarely mitigated. Chronic conditions including mastitis and lameness cause ongoing pain that affects every aspect of an animal is behaviour and production. Improving pain recognition is one of the highest-leverage welfare improvements in cattle production.
