Rabbits are the third most popular pet in the UK but have welfare needs that are chronically unmet in the traditional hutch and run system.
Rabbits confined in small hutches cannot perform natural behaviours including running, leaping, and social interaction. Chronic restriction causes osteoporosis from inactivity, abnormal dental growth from inappropriate diet, and psychological distress. The welfare problems associated with traditional rabbit husbandry are so consistent that the RSPCA has campaigned for a minimum hutch size law. Most rabbit owners believe their animals are happy when they are not.
