Camera traps and remote sensing technology have transformed wildlife monitoring with fewer welfare impacts than traditional methods.
Traditional wildlife monitoring involving trapping, handling, and marking causes acute stress, injury risk, and potential long-term behavioural changes. Camera trapping eliminates most of these harms but may itself create disturbance through flash, scent, or unusual object presence. The development of eDNA and acoustic monitoring represents welfare advances over physical capture methods. Passive monitoring methods should be preferred wherever they provide equivalent data quality.
