Feral cats face significant welfare challenges and are managed through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programmes that aim to reduce populations humanely.
Feral cats live with chronic welfare challenges including injury, disease, and exposure. Intact females produce multiple litters annually, with high mortality among offspring. Lethal control of feral colonies causes suffering in trapped and killed animals and does not achieve lasting population reduction. TNR programmes sterilise and return cats to their home range, stabilising populations and allowing welfare monitoring of individual colony members. The welfare case for TNR is strongest when combined with colony management and healthcare.
