Welfare Considerations

Well-managed feeding stations provide genuine welfare benefits, especially during winter and breeding seasons. However, poorly maintained feeders concentrate birds artificially, facilitating disease transmission. Seed mixes containing split peas, lentils, and barley are largely rejected by birds and can develop mold. Window strikes cause millions of deaths and injuries. Feeders too close to windows or too far away both increase strike risk.

What You Can Do

Clean feeders thoroughly every two weeks with hot soapy water
Use high-quality species-appropriate food mixes without fillers
Place feeders either within 30cm or more than 10m from windows to reduce strikes
Provide water year-round and keep it ice-free in winter
