Transitioning to plant-based diets is one of the most significant individual actions available for reducing farm animal welfare harm, though the full picture is more complex.
The connection between dietary choice and animal welfare is direct and substantial. Each unit of animal product consumption involves animal production systems with varying welfare standards. Reducing consumption of most-intensively produced species — factory-farmed chicken, pork, and fish — has the largest welfare impact per unit of reduced consumption. Plant-based diets that replace animal products with crops do not entirely eliminate animal welfare impact through pest management and field deaths, but they substantially reduce the scale of deliberate welfare harm. Partial reduction is also meaningful — welfare impact scales with consumption.
