The golden poison dart frog is one of the most toxic animals on Earth, found only in a tiny area of Colombia's Choco rainforest — a region under severe deforestation pressure.
Habitat loss fragments populations and eliminates the arthropod prey that produces the alkaloids making these frogs toxic. Captive frogs lose toxicity when fed non-wild prey. Conservation requires protecting intact forest — maintaining ecological integrity is inseparable from welfare of this species.
