California condors, once reduced to just 27 individuals, have been brought back through intensive captive breeding, but lead poisoning from spent ammunition remains a major ongoing threat.
Lead poisoning causes severe neurological damage, organ failure, and prolonged death. Affected condors lose coordination, cannot feed, and suffer for days or weeks. The treatment — chelation therapy — requires capture and hospitalization. Each poisoning event is a significant welfare event for an individual bird.
