Manta and mobula rays are targeted for their gill plates, used in traditional Chinese medicine, despite being listed under CITES and national laws across much of their range.
Harpooning causes traumatic injury. Rays are often landed alive and may be processed while still conscious. Their long lifespan and slow reproduction mean population losses are felt for decades. The welfare cost is compounded by the ecological cost of losing large filter feeders.
