Welfare Considerations

Wild-caught spotted turtles experience the stress of capture, often transport in overcrowded containers, and high mortality rates before reaching buyers. Road mortality during spring migrations causes traumatic deaths. Slow reproduction means that each adult removed from the wild has long-lasting population effects.
