Commercial octopus farming is being developed in several countries, raising profound welfare questions given that octopuses are highly intelligent, solitary animals with complex behavioral needs.
Octopuses require novel stimulation, exploration, and solitude. Intensive farming cannot provide these without individual housing — which is extremely expensive and unscalable. Even well-managed facilities would constrain natural behavioral repertoires severely. Slaughter methods for molluscs remain poorly defined with welfare standards essentially absent.
