Foot problems from hard substrates are endemic in zoo elephants. Reproductive stress from small groups causes conflict. Weaving is an indicator of chronic stress. Despite this, the best modern elephant facilities with large, complex habitats and experienced elephant management demonstrate that substantially better welfare is achievable.
