The 3Rs framework — Replace, Reduce, Refine — guides the move away from animal testing in research and toxicology. Progress is real but significant welfare harms continue.
Laboratory animals experience procedural pain, distress from confinement, and psychological stress from isolation and novel environments. Refinement — improving procedures to minimize suffering — is often underfunded relative to replacement. Every animal in a laboratory that can be replaced by a validated alternative represents an unnecessary welfare harm.
