Commercial turkeys have been selectively bred for rapid breast growth that causes significant welfare problems. Most are raised in windowless sheds with minimal enrichment.
Turkeys with leg problems are in chronic pain and cannot move normally to reach food and water. Heat stress in intensive sheds causes distress. Beak trimming without analgesia causes acute pain. The combination of selective breeding and intensive housing creates widespread suffering that is normalized as industry standard.
