Welfare Considerations

Repeated disturbance from photographers and tourists at seal haul-out sites causes chronic stress measurable through cortisol levels. Stampedes injure and kill pups that cannot move quickly. Separated pups that are unable to find mothers suffer hypothermia and starvation. Well-intentioned wildlife watching can cause significant harm without proper guidance.

Maintain minimum 100m distance from seals at haul-out sites
Never approach a seal pup on a beach — contact BDMLR before assuming it is abandoned

Report seal disturbance to authorities and report injured seals to BDMLR
