More tigers live in captivity in the US than remain in the wild globally. The welfare of captive tigers ranges from excellent in accredited zoos to deeply poor in private ownership and tiger farms.
Private tigers in roadside attractions or private collections are typically housed in small cages, given inadequate enrichment, and handled from birth to be docile for paying customers. Cubs are separated from mothers at birth to enable handling — causing stress for both. Tiger farms raise tigers in factory-farm-like conditions purely for body part extraction.
