Welfare Considerations

Veal crates isolated calves and deprived them of iron deliberately — causing anaemia and preventing normal movement. The welfare improvement from EU crate bans is real. Rose veal in group housing with appropriate diet and enrichment represents a genuinely improved welfare outcome for calves that would otherwise be shot at birth. Supporting higher-welfare veal is preferable to a dairy system that wastes male calves.
