Elephants are cognitively complex animals with deep social bonds, multigenerational memory, and extensive spatial needs. Confinement in zoo enclosures, even modern ones, cannot replicate these conditions. Stereotypic behaviours, foot problems from hard substrates, and reproductive failure are common welfare indicators. Reputable sanctuaries that allow semi-wild living conditions with large herds offer substantially better welfare than traditional zoo settings.
