Donkeys are hardy and stoic, traits that often lead owners to underestimate their suffering. Common welfare problems include chronic lameness from hoof neglect, wounds from harness sores, exhaustion, and dehydration. The ejiao trade has driven mass slaughter, often under inhumane conditions. Community-based programmes that train owners, provide veterinary care, and improve harness design can dramatically improve donkey welfare.
