The 3Rs framework — Replace, Reduce, Refine — provides a scientific and ethical roadmap for improving animal welfare in research while maintaining scientific progress.
Animals used in research experience pain, distress, and fear. While some research cannot yet be conducted without animals, many procedures rely on outdated models when validated alternatives exist. Refinement of animal housing, social enrichment, and humane endpoints reduces suffering in research that does use animals. Regulatory application of the 3Rs is patchy, and funding for alternatives lags behind conventional animal research investment.
